First and foremost, I am relatively certain this rant shall inevitably irritate many over sensitive co-workers that believe my every waking moment is dedicated to tormenting them in writing. For those of you that are convinced this is a conspiracy, I strongly recommend seeking professional counseling and above all, get a fuck’n life...
This rant is dedicated to Bad Corporate Mangers and has been internally festering for quite some time. Contrary to popular belief, it’s not entirely directed at anyone in particular, however, is centered on those that strive to lead, regardless of limited intellectual prowess. Yes, this select personality actually exists and is legally permitted to breed. Trust me... I work for the government... Would I lie?
The catch-22 of management is that, the ones who most covet the opportunity are generally the worst at it. You know whom I reference, and must agree, this person is more hazardous than a porcupine wandering aimlessly in the inflatable doll factory. Some people, for worse or for worst, want to be managers because it gives them power over their peers. Or worse yet, a chubby the size of a small child’s arm… Theoretically, there's nothing respectable that can come of this arrangement: you should never give power to someone who craves it, for reasons that I hope are obvious. If this is above your limited comprehension, think; Hitler and Jim Jones. Each was proclaimed as relatively charming in own regard, however, capable to accelerating from zero to bitch on less than 2 seconds and perpetrating irreparable damage, minus thought process.
OK, so maybe this manager won’t truly commit genocide or force disciples to drink the Kool-Aid, however, they shall inevitably dismantle environment core fiber and at best, squelch employee creativity and personal motivation. If you are having issues fathoming this concept, obviously this rant is about you and by every stretch of the imagination; you are in serious denial...
It’s immediately obvious to the casual observer; I’m old and have been around the corporate environment many years. However, by no stretch of the human imagination, does this entitle me to be an expert, however, does award me the luxury of making first hand comparisons. I have worked for many good managers, even great ones, and none of them are managing. They're leading, and yes, there's a world of difference.
Yes, I know this sounds strange however, I don’t expect many to grasp this concept. You've heard a thousand clichéd descriptions of leadership, most promote an undesirable gag-reflex, however, you perhaps know one or two people you consider great leaders. This select group generally leads by example and does not rely on corporate embellished powers to oppress subordinates.
We won't attempt to characterize those styles here; it would take us too far outside desired scope. However, it’s my personal humble opinion, the best managers don't want to manage: they want to lead. Contrary to popular belief, most leaders probably don't think about it much, because they're too busy leading. Yes, I know, you can’t believe this is possible. For those of you, totally confused by this, please, by all means, seek alternate Internet diversions, such as Disney or Crayola Crayon website...
Bye-Bye, General Dynamics and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba... Another lucrative contract lost, directly attributed to inferior business practices and ethics... *sigh* |
