| Population Control... |
| |
Various options present themselves, however not all solutions are guaranteed and some might be perceived as harsh or inhuman. As stereotypical shallow American, yes, I fall into the self imposed selfish category and my opinions or observations may not parallel mainstream society. Unfortunately, we can not attend to all world needs or control population explosion without the assistance from those experiencing aforementioned tribulations. However, we can provide education, guidance and a degree of economics to alleviate small portions.
Considering it’s humanly impossible to create “new” land to
accommodate the ever-increasing population without infringing
into the natural ecosystem. We might consider controlling world
population. Now, before anyone starts screaming genocide, open
your Environmental Science text book and search for “demographic
transition.” Believe it or not, there exists a mathematical
equation to explain and rationalize this issue. So deal with
it.
According to Richard T. Wright; “The basic premise of
demographic transition is the decline of birth and death rates
as a society modernizes.” Additionally, Mark Duffy,
professor of economics at Iowa State University, once stated;
“Change is inevitable; we can only hope to influence its
direction.” Now, with that stated, does a society truly need to
modernize for the fertility rate to stabilize? In my opinion,
it’s a start in the right direction however this most likely
will not resolve all issues. As with any new concept, this one
is no exception and has been debated for many years. This
hypothesis has two major parts; “A country must adopt policies restricting family size or make
birth control readily available and if a country concentrates
its efforts on development, then the birth rate will naturally
decline as it has in the developed nations.” (Wright, R.T.,
2005)
In conclusion, there exists no definitive solution for solving
world population issues. Face it, if there were, don’t you
think aforementioned trials and tribulations would already be
resolved by people much smarter than you and I? There only
exists hope for world cooperation and peaceful acceptance. I
believe it was David Clayton Thomas who once stated; “Tax the
rich, feed the poor, till there are no rich no more… I’d love
to change the world, but, I just don’t know what to do. So I
leave it up to you…” |
