An excellent replacement for Notepad, has multiple file support, is fast and tiny and very configurable. The program also features the ability to transfer documents to your web browser and the "clipbook". The clipbook is a user-definable list of text items (HTML tags, glossaries, etc.) stored in a template-based system that can be pasted into documents by double-clicking on their header or through drag-and-drop. Adobe PhotoShop is the all-encompassing, industry standard, and is a complete if complex and somewhat pricey program. It is now bundled with Adobe ImageReady, a must-have web graphics optimizer, that will reduce size of the graphics file without sacrificing image quality. ImageReady features the ability to view up to 4 different optimizations at the same time, including mixed .jpg and .gif formats.
Adobe PhotoShop LE ***
Adobe PhotoShop LE is cut-down version of Adobe Photoshop, which is useful for quick work. Unlike the full version, it does not support layers, which are wonderful constructs that allow you to try different effects, as well as overlay items with various transparencies. This product often comes bundled with digital cameras and scanners; in fact, our copy came with our scanner.
Paint Shop Pro 6 ****
An excellent compromise between complexity and value, Paint Shop Pro supports layers and is a full fledged graphics program, and has developed into a worthy competitor of the Adobe product. Of special interest are its 'picture tubes' - a method of painting with repetitive images.
GIMPshop ****
The GIMPshop (GNU Image Manipulation Program), in case you haven’t heard of it, is the foremost free open source bitmap-editing application for the creation and advanced editing and manipulation of digital images. It is very high on the (small) list of contenders for the title of freeware Photoshop replacement. |
