Microsoft Windows NT Server
Basic Administration

Track
Server Performance |
|
| |
Performance Monitor is the best tool for spying on NT Server and
creating a log that tracks performance. To use it, open Performance
Monitor in the Administration folder, then select Log from the View
menu. Go to Edit/Add To Log and select the processes you want to
monitor. Under Options/ Lo g, create a filename for your log. To stop
Performance Monitor, click on Options/Log/Stop Log. Now, select
Options/Data From/Log File. Select the radio button beside PERFMON.LOG
field and locate your log file. |

Manage NT from Win95 |
|
| |
You can manage NT Server from Win95 using various tools on the NT Server
CD-ROM. Install the tools by going to Control Panel and selecting
Add/Remove Programs. Select the Windows Setup tab and click on Have
Disk. Insert the NT 4.0 Server disk and type the drive letter, then
\Clients\SrvTools\Win95. |
|
| |
 |
|
| |
Stay Alert! |
|
| |
Automate alerts by launching Alerter in Control Panel/Service and
setting it to Automatic. Next, launch the Server Manager from the
Administrative Tools group. Select the server you wish to send alerts
to, and Computer/Properties from the title bar. Click on the Alerts
button and type the user name or computer name in the "New computer
or username" box, then click on Add. |
|
| |
 |
|
| |
Remote Control |
|
| |
You can manage a remote server from any NT system. Launch Server Manager
from the Administrative Tools group and select View/Servers for a list
of servers. |
|
| |
 |
|
| |
Plan to Expand |
|
| |
If you create multiple partitions on NT servers to separate NT from
application files, remember to leave 80MB or so free on your NT
partition for future service packs. |
|
| |
 |
|
| |
Default Accounts Are Easy Targets |
|
| |
Many hackers or curious users target administrator or default service
accounts on NT. Either rename these accounts or create another log-on
account for these services. |
|
| |
 |
|
| |
One Password, Two Uses |
|
| |
SRVTools, available as a download from Microsoft's Web site, allows
Windows 9x workstations and NT Workstation to administrate Primary and
Backup Domain Controllers without having to be on the PDC or BDC. But
the users need the same client and server networking passwords. |
|
| |
 |
|
| |
Current Events |
|
| |
Check NT's event logs daily to ensure that backups, automated
defragmentation or any other application is running error-free. If NT
records an error to the event log, get more information by typing NET
HELPMSG message# (where message# is a message number variable) at the
command prompt. |

NetWare Out, NT In |
|
| |
NT Server 4.0 can migrate users and group account information (without
passwords) from NetWare to NT. You need NT Server formatted with NTFS,
plus NWLink and Gateway Services for NetWare installed. |
